Started by the Swedish company Rörstrand in 1873, the Arabia factory began production near Helsinki, Finland. The location had been chosen due to its proximity to Russia and Russia's huge market potential. After World War I, the company became Finnish owned again, but is now part of the same group as Rörstrand.
Arabia has always been known for its innovative designs and high quality. Its designers have won many prestigious international awards. Shown right is Ulla Procope (1921-68), one of Arabia's most talented designers. She created the Ruska and Valencia ranges and her G2 teapots and marmelade containers have become design classics.
