Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was one of the foremost figures in modern Finnish art during the 1950s and 60s. This charismatic personality worked in many artistic spheres - decorative sculpture, graphic art, he designed banknotes and stamps and he worked in many different mediums including wood, plastic, metal, ceramics, but above all in glass. He created many distinctive series for Iittala, he designed at international level for Rosenthal Germany and for Venini Italy. His glass designs for the Ultima Thule, Niva and Mesi ranges reflect his interest in the nature of his country, which he brilliantly combined with a clear sense of line and function.
With grateful thanks to Maaria Wirkkala for this photo.
