Gunnar Nylund

Gunnar Nylund was born in Paris in 1904, the son of Finnish sculptor Felix Nylund and his Danish wife artist Fernanda Jacobsen.  He studied ceramics in Helsinki and architecture in Copenhagen, moving to Bing & Grondahl where he worked under Jean René Gauguin. In 1929 he launched SAXBO with his colleague Nathalie Krebs.Despite the success of SAXBO, Nylund joined the Swedish company Rörstrand in 1931 where he remained until 1955.  He was renowned for creating modernist pieces with matte smooth glazes, including hare's fur and crystal glazes, as well as stoneware chamotte items.   He later worked at the Nymölle pottery in Denmark, finally working in his own studio in Lomma, Sweden. He died in 1997
